Young Couple
An interesting photo taken in Batu Pahat, Johor, date stated 1937. Look these young couple, they're most probably very young in their early teens. The girl is wearing saree typically worn by Indian women and the boy is dressed in western attire. There is no "Thali" around the girl's neck. "Thali" means in a marriage it shows the girl has already been married according to the Tamil community customs. In this case, it could be exchanging of rings. However, the uniqueness of this photo that this young couple shows the way they were dressed at that particular time period.

Muar, Johor...Wrestler !!!
If you have seen this Tamil movie titled "Madraspathinam", there is a wrestling scene in that movie. The wrestler is dressed similarly to this man in the photograph. This photo was taken in Muar, Johor in year 1930. The person in the photograph gave this to somebody in Muar. It was written at the back of the photograph. It is very rare for a wrestler to take his picture taken back then. This could be a specific reason his picture was taken.

Relaxing....
This photo was taken in Alor Setar, Kedah in 1930's period. The shoes that the lady is wearing is called the "manek shoes". Manek shoes was used by the Nyonya community during that era that symbolizes the wealth of an individual or a family. This particular couple is quite wealthy. It's very rare for Tamil community to have their photograph taken in that era, but this couple able to higher a photographer to be taken at their residential home. Their furnitures are the best proof to show that they're wealthy.

An Indian Merchant in Rangoon
Typical Indian men
The men in this photo shows a different kind of attire and stature in the Tamil society. As seen in previous photographs, they wore attire that symbolizes their status and wealth in the community. Here, these men streak ashes across part of their bodies, and you can see it clearly across their abdomen. At the hip, you can see they attach a bunch of keys. Usually the women will be keeping them instead of men. In both hands, each holding a white handkerchief and umbrella. In this photo, these men could be related to each other or they came from the same community. The background of the studio is of the typical one that's common in that era. This group could have been a wealthy ones to afford to take their photographs in the studio.
An important note: Normally this photos will be sent to their relatives staying in another place (country), to show their living life style and status in the community.

Memories Moment
The date of the photo was taken, February 18th, 1925 in Kuala Lumpur. The man wearing white colour jacket must be a well known man. Some of my photo collections, the man in white coat appears and the other man must be traders who are also well heeled individuals.
According to the antique seller/experts, they mention that it is very rare to obtain photos of Indians in Malaya because not all Indian's afford to go studio to have their pictures taken.
Take a look at the women wearing sarees and the blouse (rowkeai) is not the same as the current ones. It is a full neck rowkeai. Their accessories too are different and not wearing chapal (slipper).
From what I observe, this family could have been a Indian Christian. The reason why I say this it is because the women are not wearing their kum kum (pottu) on their foreheads as seen on most Indian women.
From what I observe, this family could have been a Indian Christian. The reason why I say this it is because the women are not wearing their kum kum (pottu) on their foreheads as seen on most Indian women.
It was proved with another photo found on the same family. The front linen stated that "T.M.S Josephine".
Administrator
This photograpgh was taken in the year 1920's to 1930's in Kuala Lumpur. It is stated on the photograph itself. If you take a look closely, you can see two indian administrators from the government with the village administrator. Two men holding their white bowler hat and a tie. It is proven that our Indian community was well educated and work with the government.
