Mortar Stone "Iddi Kallu"
A mortar stone and pestle are the tools to use to crush, grind, and mix solid substances into a powder forms. In Tamil language it was called as "Iddi Kallu". The pestle is a heavy bat-shaped object, the end of which is used for crushing and grinding. The mortar is a bowl, typically made of stone, hard wood and ceramic.The substance to be ground is placed in the mortar and ground, crushed or mixed with the pestle. In Indian culture this mortar will used in cooking to prepare certain ingredients into powder form. This mortar range into different sizes from small to the giant sizes. The smallest one was used by Nyonya communities for chewing betel. This mortar also considered as one of the most important kitchen tool for them.
